I am showing 5 dresses with hats.One is a wedding dress so today I made an upcycled wedding bouquet to go with my dress.It is refashioned from old sheet music ,hand dyed vintage lace.The collar for this bouquet is a plastic coffee can lid covered in recycle tee shirt cotton.

“They” always tell us not to buy multiples of the the same clothing item in different colors.Sometimes while thrifting you find these donated multiples and even though they may be scattered through out the store it is always clear when you have hit one persons cache.

Yesterday I lucked out and found several crinkle silk long skirts in various colors.I bought 3-there are more! For an upcycler this is a lot of un -seamed fabric to work with.

A real luxury,

Silk with hand dyed (in my bathtub) vintage lace around Empire waist.This is a perfect summer dress,light as spider webs!

Did you know that they have actually woven cloth from spider’s silk? It is amazing and there is only one piece kept under glass.Extremely rare and priceless.

I really want to touch it…just once…that’s all.

This should begin,once upon a time,but oh well,it doesn’t.

I live is the United States…a place where we,as a rule value conformity and a very narrow beauty ideal.Think blonde California Victoria Secret types…YAWN!

Growing up un-pretty and being told so (I know,it’s very sad-I’m over it) gave me the freedom to escape the Tyranny of Pretty and revel in my otherness.As I began making things I was drawn to the anti pretty but could never completely escape my indoctrination. My work,whether painting or sewing retains beauty even if the sentiment is dark or materials humble.

It doesn’t hit you over the head but it is there all the same.

Case in point- the new dress I have been working on When I began I thought I would bang this right out.To pull off the tattered party dress requires much work…much work.Originally I was going edgier and as I worked it started to become a sweet little dress .

I will be working on it for another couple of days (I hope) and will show it off then.Sure looks like an ugly duckling now but we know how the story ends.

ReFashion Confidential_Sneak Peek Eco Fashion Show

I have a fashion show coming up this Earth Day,or rather April 21 2012.I will be posting more about that later but for now I am going to show off a new dress (to go with a hat!) that I have been working on.

here is a close up of the lace collar

And the whole dress.It is made from silk jersey which was a slip or perhaps a nightgown.In addition to all the details it is now lined (with a nylon slip) and ready to be worn with out feeling naked.Silk jersey is whisper light and always makes me feel that I am handling (and sewing) spider webs.Yeah,not an easy fabric but so very luscious that it is worth it! The lace collar is probably 1920 (?).I have subtly dyed it.And the back…oh…

reFashion Confidential_For the Love of Lace

When I say lace I am talking about vintage,handmade,beautiful in it’s imperfections lace.This should never be confused with modern machine polyester lace.The new stuff has it’s uses naturally but the handmade lace is so lovely.

I have been dyeing it ,cutting it apart into elements and appliqueing it …everywhere.I hand stitch it all on arranging pieces just so.

I also listed a new mini top hat today that I made from a silk buffalo plaid shirt.
