Where is the manager.

Where.is. the. manager.

He tells me they are no longer keeping them out but putting them out ‘seasonally’.

The beauty of the thrift store is that there is no such thing as “in style” or “in season”. We’re not talking bathing suits here but TEE SHIRTS which are season less.

Am I right?

So there are only some long sleeve shirts which are not going to cut it.(and they are asking $6.99)What is the world coming to when I can buy a new shirt at American Apparel for around the same price as a used one.Hello-thrift store-you get them for free.I mean ,I know you are funding programs with the money but you are losing sales.I think you should re think this business model.Go for volume.I would buy much more…those items I am not quite sure about…if I wasn’t paying so much.

What does this have to do with brown skirts.You’ll just have to trust me on this one.

Yes that would be the infamous st valentine’s day massacre.A day that will live in infamy and is a pretty good antidote to all the hearts and flowers usually associated with February 14.A little blood and guts kinda takes the romance out of it all and what an end to the Roaring 20s.

Dark indeed.

A few months later the stock market would crash,stock brokers would be throwing themselves out windows,fortunes lost.(I don’t think stock brokers hurled themselves to their death in 2008,did they?)

Fashion went glam and form fitting,gone was the waist less boyish figure.Think Harlow in a liquid bias cut gown!!Or even marvelous Mae West.A golden age in fashion.

Since Valentine’s day is coming and because TANGERINE is the new “it” color I decided to make another using some of the silk velvet I have left from the c1920 evening coat.

So,as I am making this piece it occurs that it bears a striking resemblance to a certain candy favorite~the conversation heart.I had to,had to I say, embroider some little phrase on the top.

BE MINE-succinct!You can make a statement without saying a word.Think of it as a “message tee shirt” for the fashion conscious.Or something.

My first project was to make a custom feathered headpiece and get it to the customer by the 19th.Shipped this morning,no problem.

The fabrics are all upcycles -some tee shirt cotton,some silk,some other cotton with some embroidery and beading on the side.The beads are vintage cobalt blue,real cobalt in those days!The metal focal detail is a vintage dress clip with wonderful patina.I have added some vintage glass teardrops with embedded wires (I love them) in a smokey gray.

I also have continued with the Cocktail Hat,otherwise known as “the glorified headband”,I am very pleased with this little confection!

Perfect for short or long hair.Completely upcycled and hand painted.

You know you want one!!!

Winter 1914: German and English troops are dug in to trenches,hunkered down for a “long winter’s night”.
On Christmas Eve, many German and British troops sang Christmas carols to each other across no man’s land.

On Christmas Day, some German soldiers emerged from their trenches singing carols .  Allied soldiers feared it was a trick, but  the Germans being unarmed inspired the Allies to climb out of their trenches and shake hands with the enemy soldiers.

Some soldiers used this short-lived ceasefire for a more somber task: the retrieval of the bodies of fellow combatants who had fallen  between the lines.

To paraphrase-War…what is it good for…absolutely nothing.

Fairies and goblins exploded into Victorian artistic and literary life with the publication of Edgar Taylor’s first English translation of Grimm’s Fairy Tales in 1823. As well as these traditional tales, there were new fairy and fantasy stories from Charles Kingsley, Christina Rossetti and Lewis Carroll. Dickens wrote the most famous Christmas ghost story, A Christmas Carol (1843), and also a Christmas fairy story intended to be read aloud on winter evenings, The Cricket on the Hearth: A Fairy-tale of Home (1846).

Originally published on 17 December 1843, the book was rapturously reviewed and became an instant success, the first 6,000 copies of its initial print-run being sold out by Christmas, with 2,000 further copies from the second printing snapped up by the 6th of January. While obviously enormously popular from the outset, it has remained Dickens’ most widely enjoyed work, with hundreds of further reprints and adaptations.

It just isn’t Christmas without Alastair Sim.

Been on the hunt at the usual places and have found some lovely stuff.Some of it is silk velvet (ah!) and some is the stretchy kind.The colors are rich and luxurious.

I have also been working on a line of Cocktail hats.Remember on “I Love Lucy” those little glorified headbands she would wear,well,I am revisiting that style

wearable art!

And then there are a couple new ones that would be beautiful worn out to ,say,The Edwardian Ball.

Or this little paisley silk velvet pork pie hat.

All these hats were once clothing bought at a thrift store!

1. Help contribute to establishing a new economy!

2. Contribute to decrease in fossil fuel erosion
(purchasing mass produced products generally come from overseas – barging it all over, production costs etc)

3. This new breed of craftspeople are often using recycled materials. Isn’t there too much junk already?

4.Purchase from artisans/craftspeople who love creating their wares and pay a great attention to detail.Like it used to be.

5. Buying from craftspeople is a conscious decision.  Be more conscious of spending and of where  hard-earned money is going.  This contributes to the bigger picture.

6. Made to last. Many  manufacturers  make things with a purposelessly short (seasonal) lifespan .A handmade item will be made to last. This, of course, is much better for the environment. Quality over quantity!
